Pushing the Limits of Camera Tech

c500_586x186_heroMy first pair of Oakleys were Oakley “Frogskins” that I bought in the 80’s. Loved them. Until I recently found something a little cooler. Yes, the creator of Oakley Sunglasses is also responsible for the RED camera that Peter Jackson shoots with.

Great article from Inc. magazine.

And now Jim Jannard, creator of said RED camera, is dissing on the Canon C500. Is it sour grapes, or is he correct? He is a Mad Scientist, that’s for sure.

RODE smartLav microphone looks genius

main_smartlavI’m constantly amazed at the ingenuity that is coming out of the uses of smartphones.

Although as of today it’s not for sale to the public, this looks like a fantastic addition to FRAMES & PIXELS’ audio arsenal. The RODE smartLav plugs to any iOS or Android device, allowing it to record directly to your phone. Audio can then be sent via Dropbox or downloaded through iTunes. Given that on any shoot we probably have a minimum of 2 iPhones, the convenience factor really goes up. RODE makes some great microphones, so I’ve got pretty high hopes for this as a solution.

The iOS app is available here.

More information on the RODE smartLav is available here.

Pre-Production Prep

Athletes prep themselves for their event or their game; trying to do their best for the moment they’ve been training. A shoot or production day is a lot like that at FRAMES & PIXELS, all the pieces have to fall in place. Check all of the gear the night before… charge the batteries, clean the lenses, wipe the SD cards. The morning of… load the gear (heaviest and most bulky first), check the scripts, plan the shots, review those plans, drink lots of coffee.

When a shoot get cancelled, we lose a lot of effort. Time to re-invest that effort elsewhere today.
